The Clergy in Kitwe say they will not support the submission by the Zambia Law Development Commission to repeal the current law Article 166 of the Penal Code that prohibits bigamy with a view to legalize polygamous marriages.

Kitwe Pastors Fellowship Chairperson Bishop Raddy Lewila in interview with Flava Fm News, Bishop Lewila said such a proposal will not be supported by the Church.

Article 166 of the Penal Code Chapter 87 states that Any person who, having a husband or wife living, goes through a ceremony of marriage which is void by reason of its taking place during the life of such husband or wife, is guilty of a felony and is liable to imprisonment for five years.

And Bishop Lewila has indicated that polygamous marriages once granted will result in the loss of morality for the next generation.

He says cases of suicide and divorce have increased because many people are engaging in multiple relationships a situation he said should not be allowed.

Bishop Lewila notes that many families have suffered because of infidelity saying the general citizenry should rise up defend the proposal.
