13 people died on the spot in a road traffic accident after the Mitsubishi Rosa Bus they were traveling in collided with a freightliner truck.

The driver of the Rosa Bus also died.

Southern Province Police Officer Commanding Alfred who has confirmed the sad development says the accident occurred this morning around 04:30 hours along the Great North Road in Pemba.

Involved was a Mitsubishi Rosa registration number AJE 1365 belonging to United Church of Zambia UCZ and was driven by Webster Siyamuyuwa 35 of New Houses area who collided with a Freightliner truck registration number ALH 6626 AAN 3923T driven by Bruno Malufu 30 of Solomon compound in Kafue.

The accident happened when the driver of a Mitsubishi Rosa Bus failed to keep his lane and in the process colided with the truck.

The deceased persons have been identified as Chiboola Beene of Munyumbwe in Gweembe District, Panji Mweetwa of Unknown address, Merry Chipikili of Kabanana compound in Maamba and 10 other unidentified deceased passengers out of which six are females amongst them a juvenile aged one year six months and four males.

17 people were seriously injured including one passenger from the truck named Annie Hambwaza of Maamba 55 who sustained deep cuts on the head and bleeding from the nose.

The 17 victims are admitted to Monze Mission Hospital while the Mitsubishi Rosa bus was extensively damaged as the truck had the front part extensively damaged and its driver escaped unhurt.
