Residents of Kitwe’s Chimwemwe East Township are living in fear as crocodiles invade their homes through the Mindolo stream from Kafue River.

The invasion of Crocodiles into the residents’ homes is as a result of heavy rains being experienced in the City causing the Crocodile infested Kafue River busting into Mindolo stream paving way for the reptiles to take a different route in search of food.

Kitwe District Commissioner Lawrence Mwanza on Wednesday visited the area to understand what the situation residents were going through and said the local leadership will engage the department National Parks and wildlife to crop some of the crocodiles for the residents’ safety.

One of the residents Christine Musonda narrated that on December 25 2021, around 22:00 hours, she found a crocodile at the doorstep as she tried to go outside to get a bucket of water which she had left.

Another survivor of the crocodile attack in 2013, Goodson Ndojhi said the community has been appealing to the local leadership to address the situation but nothing has been done.

And Kitwe District Commissioner Lawrence Mwanza said his office will also engage the Zambia Environmental Management Authority (ZEMA) over the houses that have been built along the stream saying what he found needed urgent attention.
