nothing new in the recent pronounced policies on social protection schemes – The Opposition Green party

The Opposition Green party says there is nothing new in the recent pronouncement by the Minister of Community Development and Social Services, Doreen Mwamba on the policies aimed at enhancing social protection schemes for the old people and persons with mental health challenges.

Party President Peter Sinkamba tells Flava Fm News that there has been a reduction on social protection scheme in the 2022 budget noting that in 2017 the budget was at two-point-seven percent and that in 2018, the budget was at three-point-two percent.

Mr Sinkamba notes that in 2019 it was two-point-five percent, in 2020 it was two-point four, in 2021 it was four-point zero while the next allocation is at three-point six percent of the total budget.

He adds that since the UNIP days, there has always been an allocation to social protection and that the funds under this scheme are aimed at helping the vulnerable people in different communities through social cash transfer saying the important funds caters for the old people and those with mental health conditions.

Mr Sinkamba has further disclosed since independence policies on social protection have always been there and that unless there are new additions to the already existing policies, adding that with proper implementation, the funds will help address many challenges that the vulnerable are faced with in different communities

Minister of Community Development and Social Services, Doreen Mwamba disclosed that Government is putting in place policies aimed at enhancing social protection schemes for the old including person’s with health conditions.

She says government will use a multi-sectoral approach and multi-disciplinary community inclusive development model to enhance social assistance, service delivery and protection schemes for the vulnerable people.
