The Zambia National Farmers Union (ZNFU) has called on farmers not to panic due to delayed rains as the country will experience normal rainfall after 16th December.
ZNFU Spokesperson Calvin Kaleyi notes that projections from the Zambia Meteorological Department indicate that the country will start experiencing normal rains after mid December.
Mr. Kaleyi has advised farmers to change their farming strategies and start planting early or mid maturing variety of seeds that guarantee a good harvest within 90 to 110 days of normal rains.
He has since cautioned farmers not to buy seeds from unauthorised dealers but from renowned agro dealers, adding that if they buy seeds from unauthorized dealers, there is a possibility of only 10 percent low germination.
The Zambia Meteorological Department has projected that the country will receive normal to below normal rainfall and may experience: dry spells with a possibility of crop rotting, inadequate water for domestic consumption, agriculture, animals and energy production among others and increased chance of agriculture pests and diseases.
