JCTR PROJECTS A SHIFT IN PRICING OF GOODS IN 2022

Written by on December 10, 2021

The Jesuit Centre for Theological Reflection (JCTR) has projected a shift in pricing of goods and services in 2022.

JCTR Deputy Director, Fr Alex Muyeba says this is because of the removal of subsidies on fuel and electricity which he said will bring some upward adjustments on prices of commodities including services such as transport.

Fr Muyeba observes that if there will be an upward adjustment on electricity tariffs, households will experience some financial constraints a situation which is going to affect the cost of living.

He has disclosed that in January 2021, the average basic needs for a family of 6 in Lusaka was at K8, 300 and that it is likely to happen in 2022 if there will be any alteration on prices of fuel, electricity, essential and non-essential food items as the cost of living is likely to go upwards and that the food basket will be above K8, 300.

The Deputy Director says JCTR notes that, changes in the overall food basket will mainly be driven by the price movement in the food commodities such as mealie meal, rice, cassava flour/ meal, chicken, fruits and milk among others commodities.
