INCREASED FUEL AND ELECTRICTY TARIFFS TO NEGATIVELY IMPACT ECONOMY

Written by on December 9, 2021

A civil society organisation in Solwezi has observed that the increase in fuel and electricity tariffs will culminate into a negative social and economic impact on Zambians.

Kwatu Voice coordinator Oliver Chilefu states that this because the price of most commodities will be adjusted upwards.

Mr Chilefu says the upward adjustment of fuel and electricity tariffs is not justifiable as the cost of living is currently high.

He said the majority Zambians are currently struggling to make ends meet due to the high cost of living.

His desire is that government finds a different alternative of addressing economic challenges as opposed to immediately removing subsidies on fuel and electricity.

Mr Chilefu adds that government should find a sustainable way of making such commodities cheaper and available to the people without affecting the overall economy of the country.

Mr Chilefu has proposed the need to remove middlemen in the fuel procurement process so that the cost is not transferred to common citizens.

He has further proposed the need for government to expedite in finding a cheaper source of fuel.
