The Kitwe and District Chamber of Commerce and Industry has called for deliberate and visionary leadership in Zambia in order to revamp the mining industry in the country.
Speaking when he featured on a Mining Magazine Programme on Flava FM Radio today, Kitwe and District Chamber of Commerce and Industry Vice President for Commerce Emmanuel Mbambiko says; it’s quite sad that the country has continued exporting raw copper to the detriment of the economy when the country could have added value through the industrialization drive which was initiated by the first republican president Dr. Kenneth Kaunda.
He says it’s disheartening to note that previous governments have not taken a pragmatic approach to ensuring that the country’s minerals are not exported in their raw forms.
Mr. Mbambiko has reemphasized the need for strong political will ,in order for the country to derive maximum benefits from the mineral resource adding that lack of transparency and inconsistency surrounding mining policy regime has impacted the industry in a very negative way.
He further expressed concern, that the country has continued to export other minerals under the pretext of copper when not thereby allowing other precious metals to leave the country only to be reprocessed in foreign nations.
Mr. Mbambiko has also suggested the need for massive support to ensuring that multi facility economic zones that were initiated by President Levy Mwanawasa are developed to the fullest capacity in order to enhance industrialization.
And speaking on the same programme CBU Associate Professor in the school of mines Peter Chileshe reiterated the need to address various challenges surrounding the mining industry including revisiting the mining policy in order for the country to derive maximum from the country’s precious metals.
He also echoed the need to set up a strong industrial base that will ensure that the mineral resource is harnessed within the country.
