Written by on September 16, 2020

Following the National Democratic Congress (NDC) President Chishimba Kambwili’s   visit to Medical  stores  offices in Lusaka On Friday 11th September 2020,  where he was assured that the government is not dispensing expired medicines to various health centers.

The Zambia Medicines Regulatory Authority (ZAMRA) has recalled Paracetamol Tablets BP 500mg supplied by Honeybee Pharmacy and manufactured by Prashi Pharma PVT. Limited of India.

This is contained in a letter sent to the Director of Honey bee Pharmacy Imran Lunat by ZAMRA Director General Bernice Mwale dated 9th September.

The Authority has notified Honeybee Pharmacy that samples of Paracetamol Tablets BP 500mg Batch Numbers PPYP-03 and PPYP-04 which it supplied were analysed at the National Drug Quality Control Laboratory and were found out of specification with respect to appearance.

Honeybee Pharmacy has since been directed to initiate an urgent recall of all batches of the said drugs from circulation from the day of receipt of the letter.

ZAMRA has also requested the company to submit a detailed report on the recall process which should include the quantity of  products imported and the quantity collected from various health facilities.

And the Pharmaceutical Society of Zambia (PSZ) has commended Government for the quick action taken through ZAMRA in recalling the drugs.

PSZ President Jerome Kanyika has stated that there is need for members of public to have trust in pharmacists adding that such an incident should not occur again in future and that Government should punish the parties involved in supplying medications that have been recalled.

Meanwhile, efforts to get a comment from Ministry of Health Spokesperson Dr Able Kabalo proved futile by broadcast time as his phone went unanswered.
