The Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) is opposed to all the proposed amendments to the Republican Constitution as set out in the Constitution of Zambia (Amendment) Bill No. 10 of 2019.
Speaking at a media briefing in Lusaka, ZCTU General Secretary Cosmas Mukuka has stated that says the process was not inclusive adding that the NDF resolutions lacked consensus.
He has stated that all proposed amendments are retrogressive in intent, and generally the proposed amendments do not reflect the values and principles of democracy, the will of the Zambian people and the need for social justice to ensure lasting peace, prosperity and a shared future.
Mr Mukuka has regretted that the Amendment Bill No. 10 of 2019 has failed to inspire workers because none of the proposed amendments in the Bill is progressive.
He says the Bill takes away the right of workers to a pension benefit; takes away the power of governance institutions such as the Judicial Commission and the State Audit Commission from recommending appointments of constitutional office bearers.
