The Opposition Golden Party has opposed the possible 75% increase in electricity tariffs announced by Government stating that it is economically unsustainable and insensitive to Zambians already.
Party President Jackson Silavwe has said Zambians are already battling harsh economic conditions prevailing in the country and it is unfair to subject them to such.
He said the proposed electricity tariff hike will have devastating ripple effects in a Nation where the cost of living is already too high and beyond the reach of many citizens.
Mr Silavwe added that the move will result in the price of mealie meal, transport, accommodation and basic services to skyrocket against static wages for workers.
He said the possible electricity tariff increment goes against the premise on which the PF Government was elected into office of putting more money in people’s pockets, lower taxes and more jobs.
Mr Silavwe has since called on Government to abandon the proposed tariff hike and engage stakeholders for total turnkey solutions to the current power crisis than pushing the cost directly to citizens.
