Kitwe District Commissioner Binwell Mpundu has said no youth in the name of small scale miners will be allowed to scavenge for copper waste at the sinkhole near Mopani’s South Ore Body Shaft in Wusakile.
Mr Mpundu has told Flava Fm News that the sinkhole near the SOB shaft is a sitting time bomb which he said if not handled well can result in loss of lives.
He states that in as much as youths are earning a living from the sinkhole, government still maintains that no one will be allowed to continue conducting mining activities there.
Mr Mpundu says that the local leadership will ensure there is no loss of lives as small scale miners go about their activities like the case was at the black mountain by ensuring no one is given access to the sinkhole.
He says government is looking for alternative measures that can be put in place aimed at empowering youths as opposed to them engaging in activities that compromise their safety.
The Kitwe District Commissioner disclosed that Mopani has been advised by the Zambia Environmental Agency ZEMA to have the sinkhole buried.
