22 illegal squatters have been arrested for allegedly encroaching on land belonging to the Copperbelt University and the Kitwe City Council in Zamtan area.
Kitwe City Council Public Relations Manager Roy Kuseka said the 22 were arrested yesterday by a joint operation of the Council and state police.
He says 18 of the arrested have been charged with criminal trespass while the rest have been charged with obtaining pecuniary advantage through false pretence by charging unsuspecting members of the public a K 30 as land application and K 1,000 for land allocation.
Mr Kuseka has since urged members of the public to abstain from illegal occupation and allocations of land as well as unauthorised trespass on land as stipulated in the Urban and Regional Planning Act number 3 of 2015 and Chapter 87 of the penal code of the laws of Zambia.
