BELOVED sports presenter Robert Marawa is not letting his dismissal from SuperSport go unchallenged.
Sunday Sun can reveal that Marawa is fighting back.
The People’s Paper understands that Marawa is contemplating legal action against the sports channel.
A close source to the situation says Marawa has been in consultation with his legal team about his dismissal.
A source close to the situation said there was internal issues within SuperSport that led to Marawa’s sacking.
Said the source: “There are obvious people who have issues with Robert. Others are doing this just to clip his wings.”
Another source said Madluphuthu, as he is affectianately known, would fight back because he was never given reasons for his axing.
“He didn’t do anything wrong,” said the source.
When called for comment, Madluphuthu confirmed he has consulted with his legal team about the issue.
“Well, my lawyers are looking into the nature of what transpired, seeing that no reasons were given,” he said.
When asked if he was considering taking the matter to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA), he said: “No CCMA at all.”
On Thursday night, Marawa told the public on social media that he was told via an SMS not to bother showing up for his show, Thursday Night Live with Marawa, less than two hours before the show went on air on SuperSport 4.
This led co-host Thato Moeng to present the show alone.
The channel said in a short statement that they had already informed Marawa of their decision not to renew his contract “earlier in the week”.
The pay channel later released a statement saying: “SuperSport is in the process of an exciting refresh of its local presenter line-up, which will be unveiled as part of our new football season campaign”.
“This restructure includes us not pursuing our contractual relationship with Robert Marawa. Robert was personally advised of our decision earlier this week. We are grateful for his contribution over the years and wish him great success in his future endeavours.”
Marawa’s dismissal sparked public outrage, with some people threatening to cancel their DStv subscriptions.
Some even started a petition, demanding Marawa’s reinstatement on his show.
